A1 Housing's website has been designed to be helpful and easy to use, providing all users with access to the site, whatever their ability.
We've listed below many of the "best Practice" techniques to make the A1 Housing a more usable and accessible website.
A1 Housing's website has been coded in keeping with the guidlines issued by W3C.
Speech Enabled
The website is "speech enabled", using a system called Browsealoud. By installing a free download onto your computer, which you can do by using the link below, you can have the text on our web pages and some documents read out loud. This can be a huge help to those with visual impairments, dyslexia, literacy difficulties or those for whom English is a second language.
Once you have made the initial download it will allow you to easily access a number of other local and national government websites, as well as popular internet search engines.
Once the software has been downloaded to your computer, look for the Browsealoud icon in your system tray (which is usually the bottom right-hand corner of the screen). Right click on the icon and choose "open Browsealoud settings" from the menu. You can customise the settings, such as male or female voice, changing the speech, pitch and volume of the reader.

If you are wanting to use Browsealoud to read a PDF document you will need to double click on the icon normally on the bottom right hand side of your screen (PDF documents icon) before you will be able to read PDF documents. The icon will then change to look like this
Text Only
On our website you can have text only option. This will allow users to view the website in high contrast and without graphics and pictures. To do this click the toolbar above on 'Text Only'

You can change the size of the text into small, medium or large font; clicking on the links below:
Adobe Acrobat PDF documents
Documents and reports within this site are Published in PDF (Portable Cocument Format). Most computers will have adobe Reader already installed, but if you do not have it on your pc, you can download it free of charge at www.adode.com.
If you are using Browsealoud and it will not read a PDF document please find the instructions under the Browsealoud section.
