Your responsibilities
- Taking steps to prevent water in pipes and taps freezing in cold weather, particularly if you are going on holiday. See Cold weather.
- Turning off your water supply at the stoptap if a water pipe has burst. See Cold weather.
Advice
- You should know where the stoptap is in order to turn the water off in an emergency. Normally it is under the kitchen sink. Once a year you need to check that you can still turn it.
- If water is leaking onto electrical fittings, do not touch them and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit (mains). See Resetting a trip switch.
- Emergency repairs will only be done to make the property safe and secure. A full repair will not necessarily be carried out immediately. Follow-up repair work will be done at a later date.
- If damage is caused by water leaking, you may be able to make a claim on your contents insurance. See Home contents insurance in What you must do.
- If you, a member of your family or a visitor to your home cause damage, we expect you to get it repaired yourself.
We need to know
- What is the problem, eg: no water, pipe leaking or burst; overflow running or broken; tap dripping or faulty?
- If water is leaking into your property: is it coming from the flat above? What is the address?
- If a tap: what type is it?
- Are there any other connected problems?
