Your responsibilities
- Checking that your heating controls (room thermostat, timer or programmer) are set correctly. See Adjusting heating controls.
- Keeping your home properly heated to prevent frozen or burst pipes even when you go away on holiday. See Cold weather.
- Getting chimneys (for wood or coal fires) swept by a NACS registered sweep at least once a year in addition to the annual sweep done by us.
Advice
- If you suspect a gas leak, call National Grid (Gas) immediately on 0800 111999 - use a phone outside your home. (Using a phone inside could spark an explosion). Turn off the gas at the mains and open windows. Do not smoke or switch anything electrical on or off until problem is fixed.
- Make sure that your gas supply does not get disconnected because you have not paid your bill. If this happens, our heating engineer must reset your system. We will charge you for this.
We need to know
- What is the problem, eg: smell of gas; central heating not working; radiator leaking or not getting warm; no hot water?
- What type of heating is it: gas, electric, solid fuel (wood or coal), or oil?
- What system is it: wall-mounted boiler, fire with back boiler, or gas fire?
- Have you any other form of heating or hot water heating eg: an electric immersion heater?
- If a radiator: is it warm at the bottom and cold at the top?
- If a closed fire, what type is it: Charnwood (2 doors) or Parkray (1 door)?
