Embrace the Olympic spirit

Friday 6th January 2012

THE year of the London 2012 Olympics has finally arrived and Bassetlaw has already embraced its unique and encompassing spirit.
Pierre de Coubertin the founder of the modern Olympic Games said "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well."
Over the coming months Bassetlaw residents will have their chance to do just that and participate in sporting events and activities across the District as we seek to make the most of London 2012.
Whether it's Clay Shooting at Hyton Castle, Fencing at North Notts Arena or Cycling in Clumber Park, the Bassetlaw Games gives everybody the opportunity to enjoy Olympic sports right here in Bassetlaw. There are also educational and cultural events taking place, including the fantastic Bassetlaw Schools Torch Relay.
The Bassetlaw Games Torch will begin its journey in Worksop in February, travelling a 90 mile route around Bassetlaw before finally returning to the Town Hall in June.
The Torch will seek to visit every school in the District and will be carried by volunteers, running from school to school.
A1 Housing is proud to be a partner of the Bassetlaw Games and will be fully involved helping Bassetlaw residents to be introduced to and participate in new sporting events and activities.
If you would like to get involved and are interested in running a leg of the Schools Torch Relay then please contact Vicky Rawson from Focus on Young People in Bassetlaw on 01909 531504 or email support@foypib.org.uk.
You can also visit the website www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/bassetlawgames for more information and to see a calendar of events.
